What AAdvantage® miles are eligible to earn Loyalty Points? 

For American Airlines AAdvantage® credit cardmembers, eligible AAdvantage miles include the base miles earned on eligible purchases* using your AAdvantage® credit card, and do not include any bonus miles or accelerators

  • Every base mile equals one Loyalty Point.
  • Base miles earned vary by credit card type and issuing bank.  See the base mile earn rate for AAdvantage® credit cards issued in the USA in the table below:

Bonus miles are the “extra” miles earned in addition to base miles, whether they are permanently or promotionally offered. Some examples include:

  • AAdvantage® credit cards that earn “accelerators” or “multipliers” such as: extra miles for purchases in specific categories, with specific merchants (such as American Airlines purchases) or purchases made abroad.
  • New account or welcome bonuses, spend bonuses, etc.
  • Other promotional or recurring bonuses
  • Bonus miles do not earn Loyalty Points unless otherwise stated

Which AAdvantage® credit cards can earn Loyalty Points?

  • All Citi® / AAdvantage®, all AAdvantage® Aviator® and all AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside the U.S. are eligible.

When will I see my Loyalty Points in my AAdvantage® account? 

  • Loyalty Points will accrue starting January 1, 2022 but will not be reflected in your account until March 2022. Thereafter, Loyalty Points will be reflected as your eligible AAdvantage® miles post to your AAdvantage® account.

Does my card activity count toward Million Miler℠ status?

  • Only flight activity contributes toward Million Miler℠ status. Neither AAdvantage® miles nor Loyalty Points earned through your card contribute to Million Miler℠ status.

Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) and Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQD) - Benefit Change FAQs (For cards issued in the US only):

My AAdvantage® credit card offers the chance to earn additional EQMs or EQDs. What will happen to my benefit?  

  • For Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® cardmembers: 
    For the 2021 EQM period, the window to spend $40,000 on eligible purchases* has been extended by 2 months until 02/28/22.
    For the 2022 benefit year, you will earn 10,000 additional Loyalty Points instead of EQMs after spending $40,000 in eligible purchases* between 01/01/22 and 02/28/23.
  • For AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard® cardmembers: 
    For the 2021 elite qualification period, the window to meet spend thresholds on eligible purchases* has been extended by 2 months until 02/28/22.
    For the 2022 elite qualification period, you will earn up to 15,000 additional Loyalty Points if you meet spend requirements between 01/01/22 and 02/28/23. You will earn 5,000 Loyalty Points if you spend $20,000 on purchases, another 5,000 Loyalty Points if you spend $40,000 on purchases and another 5,000 Loyalty Points if you spend $50,000 or more on purchases.
  • For AAdvantage® Aviator® Business Mastercard® cardmembers: 
    For the 2021 elite qualification period, the window to meet spend thresholds on eligible purchases* has been extended by 2 months until 02/28/22.

What happens to my progress towards my EQM and EQD benefit in 2021? 

  • Good news! Your progress in 2021 is secure and you will have additional time to meet spend thresholds.  Your time period for earning the EQM and EQD benefits from your card spend has been extended by 2 months through 02/28/22.
  • Extension does not apply to the EQD Waiver promotion for 2021.

Does my spend from 01/01/22-02/28/22 count toward the EQM and EQD benefits and the additional Loyalty Points?

  • For Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive Card and AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard® cardmembers: 
    Yes! Eligible purchases* in January and February 2022 will count toward earning the EQM and EQD benefits and the additional Loyalty Points.
    Example: If you spend $25,000 in 2021 and $15,000 in January 2022, you will reach the $40,000 spend threshold and earn your 2021 EQM and EQD benefits, and your $15,000 spent in January 2022 will count towards your additional Loyalty Points for 2022.
  • For AAdvantage® Aviator® Business Mastercard® cardmembers:
    Eligible purchases in January and February 2022 will count towards earning the EQD benefit and for accrual of Loyalty Points for status in 2023.

*Purchases exclude balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler’s checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions).
